Virginia in 1918, she demonstrated excellence in her academic abilities, and graduated at 14 years old from high school. She was considered a pioneering example of African-American women in STEM. When I was a young adult, I decided to join a church named Shrine of the Black Madonna, led by Reverend Albert Cleage (Jaramogi Abebe Agyeman). He was very light-skinned. The TRUTH was, he was accepting of all shades of Blackness and they were celebrated and honored, despite false rumors spread around the community. The false rumors may have been a result of colorism, an intersectional prejudiced viewpoint that was started by slave masters so they could separate field slaves (darker skinned Blacks) from house slaves (lighter skinned Blacks). Fast forward decades later, the rumors may have been reminiscent of an inherent mistrust for those in the Black community who have been given preferential treatment. Unfair, yet here we are. Kwanzaa, is a Black celebration of community, family, and culture, helping connect African-Americans with their African roots and heritage. This celebration was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga and this year celebrated its 55th anniversary. The colors of Kwanzaa are a reflection of the Pan-African movement representing unity for peoples of African descent worldwide.
